What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students notice words that help readers see, hear, feel, smell, or taste what is happening. They choose precise, lively words when speaking and writing.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can point to a vivid word in a short text and explain what picture or feeling it creates. The student can replace a general word with a more specific word in an original sentence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think longer words are always better. They may add many describing words that do not help the reader. They may also choose exciting words that do not fit the meaning.
How to Assess It
- Give students the sentence, “The dog went across the yard.” Ask them to add one precise verb and two helpful detail words, then circle their changes.

Ways to Teach It
Place an object in a mystery bag; students feel it, choose three describing words, then reveal it and write one sentence.
Compare “The bird flew” with “The tiny red bird swooped”; ask which creates a clearer picture and why.
Play Word Swap: students draw a common verb card, such as went, and replace it with a precise verb.
Observe the playground for two minutes, then write one sentence using words that show what students saw and heard.
