What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students find words that add details about people, places, things, or actions. They explain what those words help the reader picture, hear, feel, smell, or taste.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can point to words such as tiny, rough, or sparkling and name what each describes. The student can explain how each word creates a clearer picture.

Common Misconceptions

Students may mark any unfamiliar or exciting word instead of a word that adds detail. They may define a word but not explain what it helps the reader imagine.

How to Assess It

Give students this sentence: “The fluffy white rabbit hopped through wet grass.” Ask them to circle two describing words and explain what each shows.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Place objects in a mystery bag, then have students feel one and choose word cards that describe its texture, shape, and size.

  2. Compare “The dog ran” with “The muddy dog raced quickly,” then ask which sentence creates a clearer picture and why.

  3. Play Describing Word Detective by having pairs highlight detail words in short sentences and earn a point for explaining each choice.

  4. Have students observe a classroom object and write one sentence using two words that help a classmate picture it.
