Common Misconceptions

Students may think adding many adjectives always improves a sentence. They may choose fancy but inaccurate words, or add details that do not help readers picture the subject.

How to Assess It

Give students the sentence “The dog ran.” Ask them to rewrite it with a precise verb and two details, then underline their changes.

   Place classroom objects in mystery bags, then have partners feel one object and write three clues using texture, shape, and size words.

   Compare “The bird flew” with “The tiny blue jay swooped past the window,” then ask which words create a clearer picture and why.
