What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students choose specific words that help readers picture a person, place, object, or event. They add fitting details to make simple sentences more interesting and clear.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can replace general words with specific details, such as “tiny spotted puppy” instead of “nice dog.” The added words fit the topic and help readers form a clear picture.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think any describing word improves a sentence, even when it does not fit. They may repeat words like nice, good, or big, or add details that confuse the meaning.

How to Assess It

Give students the sentence, “I saw a dog.” Ask them to rewrite it with two details that help a reader picture the dog.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Place an object in a mystery bag, let students feel it, then list words describing its texture, shape, and size.

  2. Show a picture of a storm and ask, “Which words would help someone who cannot see the picture imagine it?”

  3. Play Sentence Makeover by giving pairs plain sentence cards and awarding a point for each clear, fitting detail they add.

  4. Students create a lost-pet poster with words describing the animal’s color, size, markings, and behavior.
