What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students combine familiar base words with endings such as -s, -es, -ed, and -ing. They read each new word and explain how the ending changes its meaning.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a familiar base word, students can add the correct ending and spell the new word. They can read the word and explain whether it shows number, past action, or ongoing action.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may leave a space between the base word and ending, writing jump ing. They may use -s when -es is needed, as in wishs. They may also think -ed always sounds the same in every word.
How to Assess It
- Give students this exit ticket: Make jumping from jump, played from play, and wishes from wish, then use one word in a sentence.

Ways to Teach It
Use letter tiles to build play, plays, played, and playing, then match each word to a simple meaning card.
Ask, "How do -ed and -ing change jump?" Have students write both words and explain the difference.
Play an ending match game where students combine base-word cards with ending cards, read each word, and check whether it makes sense.
Have students find words with endings in a lunch menu or classroom notice, then circle the base word and underline the ending.
