What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students combine familiar root words with common prefixes and suffixes to make new words. They use each affix’s meaning to explain the new word.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given roots such as help, play, and kind, students choose affixes that form real words. They spell each new word and explain how the affix changes its meaning.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may attach any affix to any root and create forms such as rehappy. They may confuse where prefixes and suffixes go or ignore spelling changes in words such as happier.
How to Assess It
- Give students the root help. Ask them to build words meaning “a person who helps” and “without help,” then circle the root and underline each affix.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs root cards and affix cards to combine, read aloud, and sort into real words and made-up words.
Ask students to write how adding re- changes play, then compare replay with playful.
Play Affix Match by having students pair roots and affixes, earn a point for each valid word, and explain its meaning.
Have students find affixed words on food packages or classroom notices, copy them, and label each root and affix.
