What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students connect sounds they hear with the letters or letter teams that spell them. They say sounds for written spellings and write spellings for spoken sounds.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can hear a target sound and write the letter or letter team that represents it. They can also see a taught spelling and say its sound in words and alone.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may give a letter name instead of its sound. They may assume every sound has one spelling, or treat two-letter spellings such as sh as two separate sounds.
How to Assess It
- Say five taught sounds, one at a time, and have students write the matching letters. Then show three letter cards and ask for each sound.

Ways to Teach It
Give students letter tiles and picture cards, then have them build the spelling for each picture's first or last sound.
Ask, “What letter spells the first sound in sun?” Have students write the letter and explain how they know.
Play sound bingo by saying phonemes while students cover the matching graphemes on their boards.
Students label five classroom objects, then circle the letter or letter team that spells each word's beginning sound.
