What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students connect every consonant sound to the letter or letters that spell it. They read and spell words with single consonants, blends, and digraphs.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students give the correct sound when shown a consonant, blend, or digraph. They also write the matching letters when they hear those sounds in words.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat a digraph as two separate sounds, such as reading sh as /s/ /h/. They may drop one sound in a blend or confuse similar sounds such as /b/ and /p/.
How to Assess It
- Say six words, such as ship, frog, drum, bath, clap, and ring. Have students write the consonant letters for each word and underline blends or circle digraphs.

Ways to Teach It
Give students letter tiles to build words such as ship, crab, thin, and flag, then have them touch each spelling while saying its sound.
Ask students to explain how the consonant sounds in shop and stop are alike and different, then write one more example of each.
Play consonant bingo using cards with letters, blends, and digraphs while calling out sounds or sample words.
Have students find classroom labels containing blends or digraphs, copy five words, and mark the target consonant spelling in each.
