Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students explain why a classroom or community has rules. They identify people who make or enforce rules and describe how rules help people stay safe and work together.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can name a rule, tell who is responsible for it, and explain its purpose. The student can also sort examples into fair, safe, and helpful behavior.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think rules only stop fun or that every adult can make any rule. They may also confuse rules with personal choices, such as choosing a favorite color.
How to Assess It: Show a picture of children crossing at a crosswalk. Ask, “What rule are they following, who helps enforce it, and why do we need it?”

Lesson moves

Give groups picture cards of classroom behaviors, then have them sort each behavior under safe, fair, or helpful.
Ask students to draw one classroom rule and write or dictate what could happen without it.
Play Rule Match by pairing picture cards showing a rule with cards showing the reason for that rule.
Take a school walk to find rules on signs, then discuss who follows each rule and why.
