What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify key people and groups involved in the American Revolution. They explain each viewpoint, motivation, action, and effect using evidence from primary and secondary sources.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a short source, a student identifies the viewpoint, states the political or social goal, and cites a phrase as evidence. The student compares viewpoints and explains how actions changed support for independence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume all colonists supported independence or that Patriots shared the same motives. They may treat Native nations, women, and Black Americans as unified groups rather than people with different goals and choices.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short quotation from Thomas Paine, Abigail Adams, or a Loyalist. Ask them to name the viewpoint, identify one motivation, and underline supporting evidence.
