What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students name key people and groups connected to the Revolution. They describe each person’s role, allegiance, actions, and impact on the war or independence.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly connect figures such as George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and Marquis de Lafayette to their contributions. They also explain how Patriots, Loyalists, women, Native nations, and Black Americans participated in different ways.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume all colonists supported independence or that every participant fought as a soldier. They may confuse Washington’s military leadership with Jefferson’s writing or overlook divided loyalties within groups.
How to Assess It
- Give students four names or groups and ask them to write one accurate role for each. Include one leader, one ally, and two social groups.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs printed person, group, action, and allegiance cards to sort into accurate sets, then check each match with a short source.
Ask students to write which participant had the greatest effect on the Revolution and support the choice with two facts.
Play a clue game where students identify a person or group from three facts about actions, alliances, or wartime experiences.
Examine people shown on currency, stamps, or local street names, then connect each person to a Revolutionary role or event.
