What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify groups that supported the American or British war effort, including women, African Americans, Native nations, Hessians, and foreign allies. They explain each group’s contribution and connect it to a battle, military need, or final outcome.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can sort groups by the side they supported while recognizing that some groups were divided. They can explain how specific actions, such as French military aid, changed the course or outcome of the war.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat women, African Americans, or Native Americans as unified groups that all supported one side. They may also confuse participation with impact or assume the Patriots won without foreign support.
How to Assess It
- Give students this exit prompt: Choose one influential group and explain its contribution and one effect on the war’s outcome. Require two specific facts.
