What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify business founders from different genders, ethnic groups, and starting circumstances. They name what each person sold and explain how the business aimed to earn more money than it spent.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can match at least four entrepreneurs to their businesses and describe their varied backgrounds. For each, the student gives evidence that the founder planned to make a profit.

Common Misconceptions

Students may assume entrepreneurs are always wealthy men or that they begin with large companies. They may label any inventor, manager, or nonprofit founder as an entrepreneur. They also confuse sales revenue with profit.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Choose two entrepreneurs from the class profiles who differ in gender, ethnicity, or starting circumstances. For each, name the business, what it sold, and evidence the founder intended to earn a profit.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Match entrepreneur profile cards to business cards and profit clues, then group the matches by gender, culture, and starting circumstances.

  2. Write a six-sentence comparison of Madam C. J. Walker and Daymond John, naming each business, background, customers, and path to profit.

  3. Play Who Am I? using clues about an entrepreneur's background, business, product, customers, and method for earning profit.

  4. Interview a local business owner or study a business website, then report what the company sells, its customers, costs, and sources of profit.
