What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify Florida business founders from different racial, ethnic, cultural, and gender backgrounds. They explain how each person created jobs, services, industries, or community growth.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can name several Florida entrepreneurs and accurately describe their businesses and backgrounds. They use evidence to connect each venture to specific changes in a Florida community. They can compare the effects of two entrepreneurs.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may label any famous Floridian, inventor, or employee as an entrepreneur. They may assume only wealthy men started businesses, or describe a business without explaining its effect on workers and communities.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: Vicente Martinez-Ybor, a Spanish-born immigrant, opened a Tampa cigar factory and hired many workers. Explain one other economic change the factory could cause in Tampa.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups profile cards for A. L. Lewis, Mary McLeod Bethune, Vicente Martinez-Ybor, and one local founder, then map their economic effects.
Ask, “How might an entrepreneur’s background shape the business they build?” Students support answers with details from two profile cards.
Play a five-part matching game using names, background clues, businesses, Florida locations, and effects on jobs or services.
Students examine a local restaurant or shop website, list its services and jobs, and predict how customer spending moves through the community.
