What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students name major federal antitrust measures, including the Sherman Antitrust Act, Clayton Antitrust Act, and Federal Trade Commission Act. They explain how these measures address price fixing, monopolization, harmful mergers, and unfair business practices.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a business scenario, students can identify the law or agency that applies and explain why. They can distinguish a successful large company from a company using illegal practices to block competition.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think every monopoly or large company is automatically illegal. They may also think antitrust laws protect individual businesses from failure, rather than protecting competition and consumer choice.

How to Assess It

Give students three scenarios involving price fixing, a harmful merger, and deceptive sales practices. Have them match each scenario to a law or agency and explain the match.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Run a chip-trading market with one seller, then several sellers, and compare prices, choices, and bargaining power.

  2. Ask students to write whether the government should stop two major grocery chains from merging, using two facts as support.

  3. Have teams sort scenario cards under Sherman Act, Clayton Act, FTC Act, or legal competition, then defend one choice.

  4. Read a short FTC merger case summary and identify how the proposed deal could affect local prices and consumer choices.
