What Students Need to Do: Students trace how taxes, trade limits, troop actions, and punishment increased conflict with Britain. They explain how ignored petitions and repeated disputes shaped the grievances listed in the Declaration of Independence.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can build a clear cause-and-effect chain from a British policy to a colonial response, then to Britain's reaction. They can connect specific events, such as the Stamp Act or Intolerable Acts, to a grievance in the Declaration.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think colonists opposed all taxes, rather than taxation without colonial representation. They may also assume every colonist supported independence or that one event alone caused the Declaration.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Choose one British policy and explain how colonists responded, how Britain reacted, and how the conflict supported independence.

Lesson moves

Give groups policy, colonial response, and British reaction cards to arrange into three-part cause-and-effect chains.
Ask students to write: When does a government's refusal to address complaints justify separation? Use two colonial examples.
Play a matching game connecting the Stamp Act, Tea Act, and Intolerable Acts with colonial actions and Declaration grievances.
Have students turn a familiar school complaint into a formal grievance, then compare its structure with one grievance from the Declaration.
