What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify key political ideas, including natural rights, equality, consent of the governed, and the right to change an abusive government. They connect specific colonial grievances to those ideas and explain how the complaints support independence.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can paraphrase an excerpt and label it as a political principle or a grievance. The student can explain which principle a grievance violates and how it strengthens the case for separation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often confuse the Declaration with the Constitution and claim it created the national government. They may treat the grievances as unrelated complaints rather than evidence supporting independence. They may also assume its equality claim was fully applied to everyone in 1776.
How to Assess It
- Give students one political principle and one grievance from the document. Ask: “Paraphrase both passages, then explain how the grievance violates the principle and supports separation.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs excerpt cards to sort into political principles, grievances, and statements supporting independence, then require a reason for each choice.
Ask students to write: “Which grievance makes the strongest case for independence, and what political principle does it violate?”
Play a matching game where teams pair grievance cards with natural rights, consent, representative government, or limits on executive power.
Have students label the claim, evidence, and requested remedy in a local petition, then compare its structure with the Declaration.
