What Students Need to Do: Students break the document into its main sections and explain the purpose of each one. They analyze its claims about rights, evidence against the king, and effects on the colonies and later movements.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can label a passage, paraphrase it, and explain how it supports the case for independence. They can name immediate and lasting consequences, using evidence from the document.
Common Misconceptions: Students often confuse the Declaration with the Constitution or think it created the new government. They may think independence began or the war ended immediately, or that its stated rights applied equally to everyone.
How to Assess It: Give students one short excerpt and ask: Which section is it from, what claim does it make, and what was one consequence of that claim?

Lesson moves

Give groups a cut-up copy of the document to arrange by section, then have them label each section's purpose.
Ask students to choose the strongest grievance and write three sentences explaining why it supports separation from Britain.
Use a card-matching race with excerpts, section names, plain-language summaries, and consequences.
Compare the equality claim with a passage from the Seneca Falls Declaration and identify how later reformers reused its language.
