What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students trace how Nazi policies escalated from exclusion and lost rights to confinement, deportation, and mass murder. They explain how government agencies, laws, propaganda, and collaborators carried out the persecution of European Jews.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students place major events from 1933 to 1945 in order and explain how each stage enabled the next. They use evidence to distinguish organized government action from isolated prejudice or wartime violence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think the Holocaust began with killing centers rather than years of legal and social persecution. They may believe Hitler acted alone, confuse concentration camps with killing centers, or overlook collaborators and Jewish resistance.
How to Assess It
- Give students four event cards: the Nuremberg Laws, ghettos, deportations, and killing centers. Ask them to order the cards and explain how government power connected the events.
