What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify who Nazi Germany targeted, especially Jewish people, and explain how antisemitism and discriminatory laws led toward genocide. They sequence major events and use age-appropriate sources to examine people’s choices and experiences.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can explain that Nazi Germany and its collaborators systematically murdered six million Jewish people while persecuting and killing other groups. They can sequence discrimination, isolation, deportation, and mass murder, then support their explanation with source evidence.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think the Holocaust was a battle, that Hitler acted alone, or that all Germans were Nazis. They may equate ordinary bullying with genocide or assume all Jewish people had the same experiences and responses.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Sequence anti-Jewish laws, ghettos, deportations, and killing centers. Then explain how government power enabled persecution, using one detail from a provided source.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Students sort cards showing anti-Jewish laws, ghettos, deportations, and killing centers, then connect one primary-source image to each stage.

  2. Read a short testimony excerpt, then discuss: What choices were available, and what risks or limits shaped those choices?

  3. Run a vocabulary match game using antisemitism, propaganda, ghetto, deportation, bystander, rescuer, and genocide with age-appropriate definitions.

  4. Students examine a school nondiscrimination policy and identify how rules and institutions can protect people, without equating bias incidents with genocide.
