What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students build a basic timeline of events that led to the Holocaust and identify the people and groups involved. They use maps, laws, photographs, and testimony to explain how antisemitism and Nazi policies developed into genocide.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can place major events in order and explain how rights were removed step by step. They can use evidence to distinguish the roles of victims, perpetrators, collaborators, bystanders, and rescuers.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think the Holocaust began with killing centers or affected only Jewish people. They may confuse concentration camps with killing centers or assume all Germans supported Nazi policies.
How to Assess It
- Give students five event cards to sequence, then ask: “How did one event make the next stage of persecution possible?” Require one cited detail.

Ways to Teach It
Students arrange dated event cards on a wall timeline, then connect each Nazi law or action to its effect on targeted people.
Ask students to write: “Why does removing legal rights often happen before mass violence?” Support the answer with two historical examples.
Run a source-sorting challenge using photographs, laws, maps, and testimony, with students labeling each source by type, date, and possible use.
Read a current news report about antisemitism, then compare its language or actions with one documented historical warning sign.
