What Mastery Looks Like: Students can build an accurate cause-and-effect chain from the cotton gin to expanded slavery. They use evidence such as rising cotton production and plantation expansion.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think the cotton gin reduced slavery because it saved labor. They may also assume Eli Whitney intended to expand slavery or that the machine harvested cotton.
How to Assess It: Give students four boxes labeled invention, profit, land, and labor. Ask them to draw arrows and explain each connection in one sentence.

Lesson moves
