What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students explain how colonial demand for labor and profit expanded the forced transport of Africans. They trace major routes and describe effects on enslaved people, African societies, colonial economies, and racial laws.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students use maps, ship records, laws, and firsthand accounts to connect causes, events, and effects. They distinguish indentured servitude from hereditary chattel slavery and support claims with evidence.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat the trade as voluntary migration or assume every voyage followed one fixed triangular route. They may confuse indentured servitude with hereditary chattel slavery. They may focus only on colonial profits and miss death, family separation, resistance, and harm to African societies.

How to Assess It

Give students a route map and a short ship record. Ask them to identify one cause, one stage of transport, and one consequence, citing both sources.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs route cards and yarn to build an Atlantic map, then label where forced transport and colonial sales occurred.

  2. Write a paragraph answering: How did colonial labor demands shape the trade, and who bore its human costs?

  3. Run a cause, route, consequence card-sort race, then require teams to defend two placements with evidence.

  4. Compare a colonial port map with a current population map, then discuss how forced migration shaped language, food, music, and communities.
