What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students match major leaders, government methods, beliefs, and discoveries to the correct empire. They explain how Mauryan central rule and Buddhist missions differed from Gupta regional rule and advances in learning and the arts.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students place the Mauryan Empire before the Gupta Empire and connect Ashoka, public edicts, and Buddhist expansion to Mauryan rule. They connect Gupta rule with political stability, zero, place value, astronomy, medicine, Sanskrit literature, and Hindu art.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often combine the empires or place Ashoka in the Gupta period. They may assume both used the same government or overlook India's role in developing zero and the decimal place value system.
How to Assess It
- Give students four items: Ashoka's edicts, Buddhist missions, Sanskrit literature, and decimal place value. Have them sort each item by empire and explain one choice.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs achievement cards and two empire mats, then have them sort the cards and place both empires on a paper timeline.
Ask students to write: Which empire left the stronger legacy, and what two achievements support your claim?
Play Maurya or Gupta: read an achievement clue, students raise an M or G card, then one student explains the match.
Examine place value and zero on a grocery receipt, then connect those tools to mathematical work during the Gupta period.
