What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students trace how Genghis Khan united Mongol groups and built an empire through conquest. They explain how Kublai Khan ruled China and how Mongol rule changed trade, travel, and daily life across Asia and parts of Europe.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can place Genghis Khan and Kublai Khan in order and explain what each did. They can use a map to describe the empire’s reach and name both a benefit, such as safer trade routes, and a harm, such as destroyed cities.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think Genghis and Kublai Khan ruled at the same time or that both ruled from China. Some assume Mongol rule only caused destruction and miss its effects on trade and travel.
How to Assess It
- Give students a blank map of Asia and Europe. Ask them to mark Mongolia and China, then write one achievement of each khan and one effect of Mongol expansion.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a map and colored pencils to mark Mongol expansion under Genghis Khan, then add Kublai Khan’s Yuan dynasty in China.
Ask students: How could a conquered city suffer while a merchant benefited from Mongol rule? Have them write two sentences.
Give groups event cards, including Mongol unification, conquest, and the Yuan dynasty, to put in order and explain.
Trace a silk shipment from China toward Europe on a map and list what Mongol control might change for its merchant.
