What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students trace how the Mongols united, conquered territory, and governed a large empire. They explain the roles of Genghis Khan and Kublai Khan, then connect Mongol rule to trade, cultural exchange, warfare, and destruction.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can place major Mongol conquests on a map and explain why the empire expanded quickly. They can distinguish Genghis Khan’s unification and conquests from Kublai Khan’s rule of China.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse Genghis Khan with Kublai Khan or assume they ruled at the same time. Some see Mongol rule only as destructive and miss its support for trade and exchange. Others think the Mongols conquered all of Europe.
How to Assess It
- Give students a blank Eurasia map and ask them to mark China, Central Asia, and eastern Europe. Then have them name one Mongol achievement and two effects of Mongol rule.
