What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare how the first civilizations grew in the Nile, Tigris-Euphrates, Indus, and Yellow River valleys with early civilizations in Mesoamerica and South America. They look for shared patterns, such as farming and larger settlements, and differences in geography and crops.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can place all six regions on a map and name an early civilization from each American region, such as the Olmec and Chavín. They can explain one similarity and one difference using specific evidence, such as river flooding or crops grown.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume every civilization began beside a large river or grew wheat. They may also treat the Olmec and Chavín as one civilization because both were in the Americas.
How to Assess It
- Give students a blank map and ask them to mark one early river valley and one early American civilization. Then ask: What helped people settle in both places, and what was different about their environments?

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a map and crop cards, then have them match wheat, rice, maize, and potatoes to the regions where people grew them.
Ask students to write two sentences: How was Olmec farming like Nile farming, and how did the settings differ?
Play a matching game with six region cards and clues about rivers, mountains, farming, and early settlements.
Use a local flood map to ask why some communities build near rivers while others choose higher ground.
