What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain how geography, farming, food surpluses, cities, government, religion, and technology supported the growth of complex societies. They compare shared patterns and regional differences using specific evidence.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can compare one Mesoamerican or South American civilization with one river valley civilization. They support each similarity and difference with accurate examples, such as terraces, chinampas, canals, flooding, roads, or writing systems.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume every early civilization formed beside a major river. They may combine the Maya, Aztec, and Inca into one culture or place them in the same period. Some treat advanced as meaning superior rather than socially and politically complex.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Choose one American civilization and one river valley civilization. Name one shared cause of growth and one geographic difference, then support each with a fact.

Ways to Teach It
Place civilization, landform, crop, and technology cards on a world map, then connect matching causes and adaptations with yarn.
Write and discuss: Why did large societies grow in both river valleys and regions such as mountains, rainforests, and lake basins?
Play Civilization Matchup: teams pair evidence cards, such as chinampas or irrigation canals, with a society and explain each choice.
Compare an ancient canal, terrace, or raised field with a local water-management system using photos, noting the problem each solves.
