What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify ideas such as popular sovereignty, limited government, federalism, separation of powers, checks and balances, and individual rights. They connect these ideas to earlier documents and explain how they support representative government.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can match a government example to the correct constitutional principle and explain their choice. They can trace a principle to an earlier source, such as the Magna Carta or Enlightenment writings.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often confuse the Constitution with the Declaration of Independence. They may think checks and balances gives every branch the same job, or that federalism gives the national government total control.
How to Assess It
- Give an exit ticket with one government scenario. Ask students to name the constitutional principle, identify one possible origin, and explain how it supports democracy.

Give groups cards naming principles, historical sources, and government examples, then have them build and explain matching sets.
