What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use an official state website to find the Florida senator and Florida House member for their home or school address. They match each person’s name to the correct office and district.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can name the current state senator and state representative for a given address. The student can distinguish these officials from the governor, U.S. senators, and members of Congress.

Common Misconceptions

Students often confuse Florida senators with U.S. senators or think every Floridian has the same legislators. They may also use outdated names or assume the governor serves in the state legislature.

How to Assess It

Give students the school address and access to Florida’s official legislator lookup tool. Ask them to record both state legislators, their offices, and their district numbers.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs office, name, district, and government-level cards, then have them build correct sets using current Florida officials.

  2. Ask students to write: How does your home address determine which Florida legislators speak for your area?

  3. Play a matching game with current officials, job titles, district numbers, and state or federal labels.

  4. Have students find one bill sponsored by a local state legislator and summarize its possible effect on their community.
