What Students Need to Do: Students change the shape of paper or clay using simple actions. They name the action and describe how the material looks different afterward.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can choose an action that will flatten, shorten, bend, or reshape a material. The student can explain that the material stayed the same kind of material.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think a changed shape means a new material was made. They may also confuse action words, such as calling crumpling tearing or calling rolling smashing.
How to Assess It: Give each student paper and clay. Say, “Change each material in one way, then tell me what you did and what changed.”

Lesson moves

Set up paper and clay stations where students cut, tear, crumple, smash, and roll, then compare each material before and after.
Show two shapes made from the same clay and ask, “What changed, and what stayed the same?”
Play an action card game where students draw a card, perform the pictured action on clay or paper, and name it.
Examine tortillas, gift wrap, or play dough and discuss how people reshape materials for cooking, wrapping, and making objects.
