What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students bend, cut, press, wet, heat, or cool materials and observe which properties change. They compare results and identify properties that stay the same.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can apply one action to two materials and record different results. They use observations to explain which properties changed and which remained the same.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think water always makes materials softer or heat always melts them. They may also think cutting or bending a material creates a new kind of matter.
How to Assess It
- Give each student a paper towel and aluminum foil, then add five drops of water to each. Ask them to name one change and one difference in the results.

Ways to Teach It
Press equal-sized pieces of clay, sponge, foil, and cardboard with the same block, then compare changes in shape and thickness.
Ask students to write why a towel and raincoat respond differently when both are placed in water.
Play a card-matching game pairing materials, actions, and likely results, then have students explain each match using property words.
Compare a wet umbrella and wet paper bag, then discuss why choosing the right material matters in rainy weather.
