What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students observe objects closely and describe their physical features. They compare two or more items using clear statements and evidence from simple tests.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can sort objects by a chosen property and explain the sorting rule. The student can compare items accurately, including results from a scratch or touch test.

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse hardness with weight or strength. They may think rough objects are always hard, or describe an object as simply “better” without naming a property.

How to Assess It

Give students a sponge and a wooden block. Ask them to write two comparison sentences using different physical properties.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups buttons, rocks, fabric scraps, and blocks to sort, then have them label each group with the property used.

  2. Ask students to write which classroom object best matches a mystery description, then support their choice with two observed features.

  3. Play Property Detective by giving three clues about an object while classmates identify it and explain which clues helped.

  4. Compare materials used in shoes, countertops, or playground surfaces, then discuss why texture and hardness fit each use.
