What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students observe objects and sort them into groups by one property, such as color, shape, size, weight, texture, or temperature. They name the sorting rule they used.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can compare several objects, choose one observable property, and place each object in the correct group. The student can explain the groups using words such as rough, smooth, heavy, light, hot, or cold.

Common Misconceptions

Students may switch sorting rules midway, grouping some objects by color and others by shape. They may confuse size with weight or assume large objects are always heavy.

How to Assess It

Give each student six classroom objects and say, “Sort these objects in one way, then tell me your sorting rule.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Place buttons, blocks, fabric scraps, and spoons in a tray for students to sort by one chosen property.

  2. Show two objects and ask, “How are these alike, and how are they different?” Record students’ property words.

  3. Play Mystery Sort by secretly choosing a property while students place object cards into two groups and guess the rule.

  4. Sort classroom items into recycling bins by material, then compare their color, texture, shape, and weight.
