What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students examine everyday objects and group them using one feature they can see, feel safely, compare, or test in water. They explain their sorting rule and regroup the same objects using a new feature.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a mixed set, students make accurate groups by color, shape, size, texture, temperature, weight, or water behavior. They name the property, explain each placement, and regroup when the rule changes.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may sort objects by their use instead of an observable property. They may confuse size with weight, assume large objects always sink, or think an object can belong in only one group.
How to Assess It
- Give each student a button, cube, cotton ball, spoon, cork, and eraser. Say, “Sort these one way, explain your rule, then sort them a different way.”

Ways to Teach It
Set out buttons, blocks, fabric scraps, and corks; students sort them on trays, then test selected items in a water tub.
Show a rock and a sponge; ask, “Which properties could we compare, and which property would make the clearest groups?”
Play Mystery Sort: secretly choose a rule, place objects into two hoops, and have students infer the rule from each placement.
Sort lunch containers by shape, texture, or weight, then discuss how those properties help with stacking, carrying, or gripping.
