What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students observe objects and describe size, shape, color, texture, and temperature. They measure weight, test whether objects sink or float, and investigate how magnets attract or repel.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose suitable tools, such as a ruler, balance, or thermometer, and record accurate observations. They sort and compare objects using measured or observed properties rather than guesses.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think large objects always weigh more or sink, while small objects always float. They may also think magnets attract every metal or that both ends of magnets always attract.
How to Assess It
- Give students a classroom object, a ruler, and a balance. Ask them to record three observed properties, two measurements, and one test they could conduct with water or magnets.

Ways to Teach It
Set up stations where students measure, touch, weigh, float, and magnet-test a spoon, block, cork, coin, and plastic cap.
Ask students to write which properties would best identify a mystery object and explain why.
Play Property Sort by having teams group object cards by shape, texture, weight, floating behavior, or magnetic response.
Compare kitchen tools to decide which would float in a sink, stick to a magnet, or feel warmer after washing.
