What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use tools and their senses safely to observe, measure, and record physical properties. They compare objects using measurements and specific evidence, not guesses.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can measure mass and volume, then describe properties such as texture, hardness, shape, and magnetism. The student can explain how two materials are alike and different using recorded data.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think larger objects always have more mass or that volume applies only to liquids. They may assume every metal attracts magnets or describe properties with opinions instead of observable evidence.
How to Assess It
- Give each student two classroom objects, a balance, and a magnet. Ask them to record four properties and write one evidence-based comparison.

Ways to Teach It
Set up stations where students measure mass and volume, test hardness and magnetism, and record color, shape, texture, and safe odors.
Ask students to write which properties best distinguish a sponge from a rock and support each choice with observations.
