What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students examine teacher-approved objects with sight, hearing, smell, and touch, using taste only when directed. They describe specific properties and compare their notes with classmates.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can give several accurate details about an object, including its number of parts, shape, surface, size, color, weight, or movement. The student can state one way a classmate's observations match and one way they differ.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may give opinions or guesses, such as “It is pretty” or “It is old,” instead of details they can sense. They may assume larger objects are always heavier or think classmates must report identical observations.
How to Assess It
- Give each pair a crayon and an eraser. Each student records three observations, then circles one detail both partners noticed and boxes one difference.

Ways to Teach It
Set up stations with a bell, cotton ball, lemon peel, and rolling ball; students record one safe observation at each station.
Show a pinecone and ask, “Which details are observations, and which are guesses?” Students write or draw two observations before sharing.
Play a property sort relay with classroom objects, grouping them by color, shape, texture, size, or motion.
Set up a pretend produce stand; students compare two apples by color, size, texture, and weight, then explain which is heavier.
