What Students Need to Do: Students use sight, hearing, smell, and safe touch to notice details about plants, animals, and nearby surroundings. They name the sense used and record what they notice.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students give specific observations, such as a leaf feels rough or a bird sounds high-pitched. They match each observation to the correct sense and avoid tasting unknown items.
Common Misconceptions: Students may give opinions or guesses, such as saying an animal is happy, instead of reporting what they notice. They may think every object should be touched or tasted.
How to Assess It: Give students a classroom plant and ask, “Write or draw three details you notice using at least two safe senses. Label each sense.”

Lesson moves

Take students on a schoolyard walk with hand lenses, then have them sketch one organism and label three sensory observations.
Ask, “How could you observe a worm without hurting it?” Students share or write safe ways to use their senses.
Play a sense-sorting game where students match observation cards, such as “buzzing” or “smooth,” to sight, hearing, smell, touch, or taste.
Examine a fresh herb and discuss how gardeners use color, smell, and texture to check plant health.
