What Students Need to Do: Students notice and describe objects in nature using sight, hearing, smell, touch, and safe tasting. They name which sense gave them each piece of information.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can describe a leaf as green, smooth, and quiet when bent. The student can match each description to the sense used and avoid unsupported guesses.
Common Misconceptions: Students may give opinions, such as “pretty,” instead of observable details. They may confuse senses, report guesses as facts, or assume every object should be tasted.
How to Assess It: Give each student a pinecone and ask, “Tell two observations and name the sense used for each.” Listen for accurate descriptions based on direct evidence.

Lesson moves

Place leaves, rocks, and pinecones on trays for students to examine with hands, eyes, noses, ears, and hand lenses.
Ask students to complete the prompt, “I observed that the leaf was ___ using my sense of ___.”
Play a sense-sorting game where students match picture cards, such as a ringing bell or rough bark, to sense labels.
Take a short schoolyard walk and have students record one thing they see, hear, smell, and safely touch.
