What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify pushes and pulls during simple object movements. They describe whether an object starts, stops, speeds up, slows down, or changes direction.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can push or pull a toy and describe the result. The student can predict how another push or pull might change its motion.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think objects move without any push or pull. They may also think a push always makes objects faster and overlook stopping or direction changes.
How to Assess It
- Give each student a toy car and ask, “Show two different ways a push can change the car’s motion.” Listen for accurate descriptions.

Ways to Teach It
Roll a ball between partners, then use gentle and strong pushes to compare its speed and distance.
Ask, “How could you make a moving toy car stop or turn?” Have students draw and explain one method.
Play Motion Match by showing action cards, such as start, stop, speed up, or turn, for students to create with toy cars.
Observe a playground swing and name when a person pushes, pulls, starts moving, slows down, or changes direction.
