What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students test gentle and strong pushes and pulls on objects such as balls, blocks, and toy cars. They observe how each force changes motion.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can describe whether an object starts, stops, speeds up, slows down, or changes direction. They support their description with an observation from a test.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think only pushes can make objects move or that every object moves the same way. They may also confuse force strength with direction.
How to Assess It
- Give each student a toy car. Ask them to show two different pushes, then draw and label how the car’s motion changed.

Ways to Teach It
Test gentle and strong pushes and pulls on balls, blocks, and toy cars, then record how far each object moves.
Ask students to write: How could you make a toy car move farther, slower, or in a new direction?
Play Force Challenge by drawing cards that say push, pull, gentle, or strong, then acting them out with classroom objects.
Find pushes and pulls on the playground, such as swings, doors, wagons, and balls, and describe each object’s motion.
