The Standard

Demonstrate that the greater the force (push or pull) applied to an object, the greater the change in motion of the object.

What Students Need to Do: Students push or pull the same object with different strengths and compare what happens. They observe changes in speed, distance traveled, or direction.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can show that a firm push changes an object's motion more than a gentle push under the same conditions. They can use observations to explain the difference.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think any push makes an object move the same way. They may focus only on distance and ignore speed or direction. Some may think pulls are not forces.
How to Assess It: Give each student a toy car. Ask them to show two pushes that cause different motion changes, then identify the stronger force and explain their evidence.

Lesson moves

Push the same toy car gently and firmly from a start line, then use tape to mark each stopping point.
Ask, "How would a gentle pull and a strong pull change a wagon's motion?" Students draw and label both outcomes.
Play Force Match: students pair picture cards showing weak or strong pushes with cards showing small or large motion changes.
Roll a playground ball gently and firmly toward a wall, then connect push strength to ball movement in sports.
