What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students apply different amounts of force to the same object and observe how its motion changes. They compare results and explain how greater force produces a greater change in speed, distance, or direction.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can plan a fair test that changes only the amount of force. They can use observations or measurements to support the claim that greater force causes greater motion change.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think a greater force always makes an object move farther, even when mass, surface, or push time changes. They may also confuse force with speed or believe motion requires a continuous force.
How to Assess It
- Give students results from three trials using the same cart with small, medium, and large pushes. Ask them to identify the greatest force and explain their choice using the motion data.
