What Students Need to Do: Students look closely at an object, plant, or event. They describe what they notice and tell what they learned from those details.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student names specific details seen, heard, smelled, or felt. The student uses those details to make a simple statement about the object or event.
Common Misconceptions: Students may guess instead of reporting what they notice. They may name opinions, such as “It is pretty,” rather than observable details like color, shape, or movement.
How to Assess It: Give each student a leaf and ask, “What do you notice, and what did you learn by looking closely?” Listen for one specific detail and one related conclusion.

Lesson moves

Give students hand lenses to examine leaves, then draw and label three details they notice.
Show a mystery object and ask, “What can we learn by looking carefully before we touch it?”
Play Observation Match by having students pair close-up picture cards with matching classroom objects.
Observe the class weather outside, then use cloud, wind, and puddle clues to describe recent conditions.
