What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students sort statements into observations, interpretations, and opinions. They explain that verified observations can be checked through repeated measurements, records, or confirmation by other observers.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify which claims report measurable facts and which express judgments or explanations. They support each choice by pointing to evidence or subjective language.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat any confident statement as a fact. They may also confuse an evidence-based interpretation with a direct observation, or assume one person's observation is already verified.
How to Assess It
- Show a photograph of a wilting plant and ask students to write one observation, one interpretation, and one opinion. Have them explain how the observation could be verified.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups a sealed mystery bag and have them record observations, interpretations, and opinions in separate columns before comparing notes.
Display a puddle near an open window and ask, "What can we observe, and what are we only inferring?"
Play Statement Sort with cards such as "The liquid is 20°C," "It feels cold," and "It was refrigerated."
Compare a weather station reading with comments like "It is freezing" and discuss which claim can be verified.
