What Students Need to Do: Students use their senses to gather facts about an object or event. They separate those facts from explanations, guesses, and conclusions based on the facts.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can label a statement as an observation or an inference and explain their choice. They support an inference with one or more observations.
Common Misconceptions: Students may treat any statement they believe as an observation. They may also call a guess an observation when it includes unseen causes, feelings, or explanations.
How to Assess It: Show a picture of a wet playground. Ask students to write one observation and one inference, then underline the evidence for their inference.

Lesson moves

Place objects in mystery bags, then have students record what they feel and make a separate inference about each object.
Show muddy footprints and ask, "What can you observe, and what do you think happened?"
Play Observation or Inference by reading statement cards and having students move to the labeled side of the room.
Observe the sky before recess, then separate visible weather facts from predictions about what may happen later.
