What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students notice and record details using their senses or simple tools. They use those details to form a reasonable explanation and revise it when new evidence appears.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can separate what was directly noticed from what was concluded. The student gives a logical explanation and names the observations that support it.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may report opinions or prior knowledge as direct observations. They may also make unsupported guesses or think a set of clues can have only one explanation.
How to Assess It
- Show a photo of a wet umbrella by a door. Ask students to write one observation and one inference using, "I infer ___ because I observe ___."

Ways to Teach It
Place an object in a mystery bag; students feel it, list three observations, infer its identity, then reveal it and check their reasoning.
Show a photo of animal tracks and ask, "What happened here, and which visible clues support your idea?"
Play Observation or Inference: read clue cards aloud, and students hold up O or I cards before explaining their choice.
Take students outside to inspect puddles, clouds, and leaves, then infer recent weather from the evidence they record.
