What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students record what they see, hear, smell, touch, or measure without adding explanations. They write possible explanations separately and connect each one to evidence.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can create a clear table with separate columns for evidence and inference. Each inference matches the recorded evidence without being presented as a fact.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may write “the plant is unhealthy” as an observation instead of recording brown leaves or a drooping stem. They may confuse opinions, predictions, and causes with direct evidence. Some think observations only involve sight and leave out measurements or other senses.
How to Assess It
- Place an ice cube on a tray. Ask students to record three observations and one inference, with each entry clearly labeled.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a sealed mystery bag to examine, then have them record sensory evidence and a separate guess about the object.
Show a photo of muddy footprints and ask, “What do you know from the image, and what are you inferring?”
Play a card sort using statements about a candle, with students placing each card under Observation or Inference.
Have students record temperature and cloud cover, then write a weather prediction supported by those observations.
