What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students observe a simple investigation and show what happened using drawings, words, numbers, or simple charts. Their notes show the steps and results, not guesses.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student creates a clear record of the setup, changes, and result. Drawings and labels are accurate enough for another person to understand what happened.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may record what they hoped would happen instead of what they observed. They may draw only the final result, omit labels, or focus on decoration rather than evidence.
How to Assess It
- Mix a spoonful of salt into water. Give students two boxes labeled before and after, then ask them to draw and label their observations.

Ways to Teach It
Place an ice cube on a tray, then have students draw and label it at the start and after ten minutes.
Show two science notebook pages and ask, “Which page helps you understand what happened, and what evidence supports your choice?”
Run a matching game where pairs connect investigation photos to the drawing, label, or simple chart that best documents each result.
Keep a class weather log for five days with a sky drawing, temperature number, and one observation word each day.
