The Standard

Raise questions about the natural world, use appropriate reference materials that support understanding to obtain information (identifying the source), conduct both individual and team investigations through free exploration and systematic investigations, and generate appropriate explanations based on those explorations.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students ask testable questions about nature and gather information from named books, articles, or trusted websites. They explore materials, plan fair investigations alone or with a team, record observations, and explain findings with evidence.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can turn an observation into a question that can be investigated. The student identifies information sources, follows a clear procedure, records useful data, and connects an explanation to the results.

Common Misconceptions

Students may ask questions that are too broad or cannot be tested. They may copy information without naming the source, change several variables at once, or treat guesses as evidence. Some think every investigation must confirm their prediction.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: “A wet paper towel dries faster by a window than in a cabinet. Write a testable question, name one useful source, outline a fair test, and describe the evidence you would collect.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give teams three paper towel brands, droppers, and cups to design and run a fair absorbency investigation, then explain results from their data.

  2. Ask students to write one testable question about seed growth and explain which observations could answer it.

  3. Run a source sorting game where students classify books, museum pages, anonymous posts, and advertisements by usefulness and name each source.

  4. Have students investigate which schoolyard surface stays coolest at noon, then use temperature data to recommend a spot for outdoor reading.
