What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students notice something in nature and ask a question they can explore. They work with classmates, use materials safely, and explain what happened using their observations.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student asks a clear question, helps carry out a simple exploration, and records what the team notices. The student gives an explanation that matches the evidence collected.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may state a fact instead of asking a question, or ask something they cannot explore. They may treat a guess as proof or give an explanation that does not match their observations.
How to Assess It
- Give pairs a magnet and five classroom objects. Ask each student to write or draw one question, one observation, and one evidence-based explanation.

Ways to Teach It
Give teams magnets and classroom objects, then have them ask a question, test objects, record evidence, and explain their finding.
Show a photograph of a puddle and ask, "What could we investigate to learn why this puddle changes?"
Play Question Sort by placing picture cards under "We can test it" or "We cannot test it here."
Observe a sunny playground spot twice in one day, then compare shadow locations and explain the change using the observations.
